How to Get a Good Nights Sleep

Happy first day of Fall & happy Friday!! I hope everyone has some fun weekend plans.

So sleep… It’s so important for your body to get the right amount of sleep!

I need at least 8 hours of sleep a day. I’d love it if I could average 9 hours, but I average about 7ish. And let me tell you, 7 hours just doesn’t cut it. Especially if I’m sick, which I AM right now and I have no idea why. I never get sick *eye roll*.

I think the norm for most people is about 6-7 hours of sleep a night. That may be because you don’t sleep through the night very well, you go to sleep too late and have to wake up too early (ME), you have too much going on that you just can’t get enough sleep, or you’re my bf and prioritize playing Destiny 2 over sleep. Like he literally played until 4am when it was first released, and the dude is supposed to wake up for work by 6am, HA.

To some it seems like sleep is a huge waste of time. To me, I’m like this is my favorite time of the day- laying in my bed and letting my body relax to the fullest. If you suffer from getting to sleep or staying asleep, keep reading this post!

Tips for being a good sleeper:

» Drink plenty of water during the day. If you go to bed dehydrated, you don’t sleep nearly as well.

» Rub Lavender Body Oil on your neck and hands. Lavender is very calming so it relaxes the mind.

» Put Lavender Oil in your diffuser and let the diffuser run by your bed. I also like to combine Lavender and Eucalyptus Oil together! Lavender is soothing and Eucalyptus is an antibacterial and deodorant, so it cleanses the air.

» Give yourself five to ten minutes of stretching right before climbing into bed. Stretching reduces stress, therefore it’s perfect right before bed. When you can release stress, you can fall asleep much easier.

» Meditate right before bed. This is also a stress reliever because you’re letting go of any tension you built up during the day. You’re also freeing your mind because your mind becomes completely empty, so there’s not a million things zooming around up there. When you’re mind is clear, you’re able to close your eyes without having your mind wander.

» If you can’t meditate or prefer not to, grab an actual book to read. For most people, reading can make you sleepy. It’s also a lot better to read a book right before bed than to look at your phone. When you’re on your phone before falling asleep, you lose track of time and before you know it, you’ve been on your phone for 40 minutes or longer. The light from your phone screen also makes your brain believe that it’s still light outside, so when you go to put your phone down, your mind isn’t ready to fall asleep.

» Get a work out in during the day. That could be going to the gym, going for a walk or jog, going to yoga class (my current favorite!), or doing a work out at home. Again, working out is a stress reliever and makes your muscles tired. Those are both great things when it comes to wanting to get a good nights sleep!

» Finally, this may not work for everyone but, I love to list the things I’m grateful for when I close my eyes. Sometimes I’ll list the things that made me happy during that day. I do this because then my last thoughts are “happy thoughts”. I’m focusing on the good, rather than the bad. And I ALWAYS fall asleep during the process!

I hope these little tips can help you in some way! Let me know what you do to get a good nights sleep.
